Top 10 fuel saving tips1. Pump up those tyres
The right tyre pressure can save you fuel. Driving with under-inflated tyres can cause increased fuel consumption. Check your tyre pressure once a month (or whenever you fill your tank) and do it when the tyres are cold (driving the car warms up the tyres and the air inside them, increasing the pressure). Know the correct tyre pressure for your car (usually displayed on the inside of the driver door) and keep your tyres inflated.
2. Make sure your air filter is clean
Clean air filter gives you better fuel consumption. A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air into the engine, which harms performance and economy. To save fuel, service your car regularly and ask for your air filter to be checked, changed or cleaned or learn how to do this yourself. Some vehicles are now fitted with a "permanent" filter which is cleaned rather than changed; they are much less restrictive than throw-away paper filters, plus they're better for the environment.
3. Keep to speed limits
The faster you drive, the more fuel you will use. Try keeping to the speed limit on the freeway for a week and see how much fuel you will save. You will probably find that you will get to work less stressed and at about the same time too. Just keep to the middle lane so those taxis and speedsters don’t get frustrated with you.
4. Keep your speed constant
Maintaining a steady pace also uses less fuel. This is because it takes more petrol or diesel to accelerate than it does to keep your car moving at a constant pace. If you are the type of person who constantly crosses over between lanes when you get stuck behind slower vehicles, you will use a lot of fuel every time you put your foot down. Give yourself enough time to get where you’re going, choose a lane, relax, enjoy the journey and see how much fuel you save.
5. Keep your revs low
When you pull off from a traffic light, accelerate carefully to save on fuel. If you drive an automatic, accelerate moderately so the transmission can shift up into the higher gears. Manuel drivers should change gears early to keep the revs down, but keep your car in a low gear if you need to accelerate to get over a hill. Keep an eye on the traffic ahead of you, looking out for potential slowing down situations, so you don’t have to brake suddenly, which wastes a lot of fuel.
6. Go easy on the aircond
Air conditioners, cause you to use more power and therefore more fuel. If you can handle it, turn off your aircon to save fuel and wind down the window. You will use less fuel if you are traveling at lower speeds. However, on the open road at higher speeds, wind resistance from your open windows and sunroof can cause you to use more fuel than the air conditioner, so consider the speed you are traveling at before you decide to turn off the aircon.
7. Big tyres and cool mags use more fuel
Mag or alloy wheels and bigger tyres may look cool, and they can definitely improve handling. But if they are wider than standard tyres, they may create more rolling resistance and decrease fuel economy. If you use your car for long road trips, standard wheels often give you better fuel economy.
8. Don’t use your car to store your stuff
The more extra baggage your car carries around, the more petrol or diesel it needs to do its job. If you use your car boot to store boxes of junk, golf clubs, luggage etc, go through the stuff you keep in the car occasionally and see what you can throw out or keep in your house; a clean, empty car uses less fuel.
9. Don’t get rid of that small, compact car when you upgrade
Most people get rid of their old cars when they buy a new one, and you may have no option if you are using it as a trade-in or have no space in your garage for another vehicle. But if you are buying a bigger car that uses a lot more petrol, consider keeping that little runaround for quick trips to the corner shop. You can save a lot of fuel as well as keep the mileage low on the new car.
10. Use your feet when you can or join a lift club
It’s obvious: if you don’t use your car that often, you will save a lot of fuel. Walking is great for your health as well as the environment and often gets you in and out of a shop quicker than if you had to find a parking, pay for it etc.
Follow the tips and you can save a lot. But if petrol price keep increasing, will you use this...

Great tips! Practicality is highly appreciated by some car users.
I can't say I use the air con much but I'm a stickler storing everything in my car. Thanks for the tips!
Manual shift driven cars allow you to change to highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting you save gas if you "nurse it along". However, if you cause the engine to "bog down", premature wearing of engine parts occurs.
